Yohimbe primarily works by inhibiting Alpha-2-Adrenergic receptors which increases noradrenaline release in the body. Yohimbe seems to amplify the effects of caffeine, is this true?
Most of the research on the synergy between Yohimbe and caffeine shows it is a potent weight/body fat loss combination. We have not come across any research demonstrating Yohimbe amplifying the effects of caffeine in regards to energy, focus, drive, etc.. However, in theory from a physiological perspective, the synergy between yohimbe and caffeine could come from the different receptors they inhibit. While yohimbe inhibits Alpha-2 receptors, caffeine inhibits adenosine receptors (adenosine slows down neural activity). When one of these types of receptors are inhibited, it is compensated by the increased function of the other and vice versa. Thus the combination of yohimbe and caffeine should have a synergistic effect on the sympathetic nervous system by stimulating the body’s fight or flight response.
